Local Government

In Strathy, government is taken as close to the people as possible, in order to give the people as great a voice as any of the politicians. This takes the form of two stages of government below The Council of Representatives: The Republic Councils and The Communal Councils.

The Republic Councils

The Republic Councils are the devolved administrations responsible for running the day to day affairs of their republics: The Republic of Langford City, The Republic of Brockburn Province and The Isle of Fara. These councils are made up of councilors elected from each commune in the republic. The Republic Councils make laws for their republics, accept and reject certain national laws, subject to the type of law, and run their own services, such as health boards and schools.

The Republic Councils also have The Representatives to The National Council of Representatives from the republic sit in on their meetings. This allows the concerns of the republics to be taken forward to the national council relatively easily. Each Council is chaired by the republic's own Commissar, he or she acts as a Head of The Republic Government and sits in on all meetings of The Commissariat.

The Communal Councils

The Communal Councils are government on the level of the people of Strathy. Each republic is divided into Communes, generally by population and resources, with each commune being represented by its own council. The Communal Council is given control over the more fundamental issues of the commune, the small, day-to-day things that affect the people on a regular basis. This includes things such as park and land maintenance, litter collections, recycling, running local schools, managing local housing, etc.

These councils are made up of residents elected from their communes every five years. The members of the council are residents of the commune and hence know it and the people. Any one over the age of 18 may stand to run for a position on the council. Each council is chaired by The Head of The Council, elected by the Council members after council elections have taken place.

After the election, the council puts forward a number of candidates for Communal Representative. The people will elect their representative, who will then represent them at The Republic Council and The National Council.
